Pinworm cure


     Pinworm cure may be applied in the same day to the entire family and it consists in the administration of anthelmintic drugs, cleaning the floors of the rooms (preferably with a vacuum cleaner) and boiling the sheets, underwear, pajamas, night shirts etc.

     For pinworm cure reasons but also for preventive purposes some more general measures should be applied: the cutting of nails as short as possible, washing the hands before each meal and after using the toilet.

     Diagnosis - Worms are sometimes visible in the anal region, at the surface of the stool or even pants. Besides these cases, the best diagnostic method consists of taking eggs from the edge of the patient's anus with an adhesive paper tape (Scotch-test) which is put under microscopic examination.

     Pyrantel is often used as the first option for the pinworm cure because the patient can buy it without a prescription. During the pinworm cure with This medicine it is recommend compliance of preventive measures to decrees the possibility of transmission through parasitosis re infection to other people. Pregnant and nursing women, along with children under 2 years should not use this pinworm cure without consulting a doctor before.

     This drug can be taken with food, milk or juice on an empty stomach. Because pinworm eggs can survive for 2 weeks after treatment with it, re infection can occur. It is usually recommended a treatment with a second dose.


Prescription Treatment - mebendazole


     It is given only with prescription. It is a tablet that should be sucked that is administrated in two doses every two weeks. The second dose is administered to kill pinworms that occurred after the first dose. It kills all the larvae and adult pinworms over a period of 2 to 3 days. It does not kill the eggs of pinworms. It is used as a pinworm cure to treat the infection. It can be given after initial stage of the pinworm cure with Pyrantel (a medicine that does not require a prescription).

     It is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women or children under 2 years.

     Mebendazole has good effects in more than 90% of cases.

     Side effects are rare but may include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain.



Pinworm cure - Note!


     Only physicians can recommend to children under 2 years the pinworm cure based on mebendazole. Pregnant and lactating women are advised against this drug without first consulting a doctor.

     Albendazole is issued only on prescription and it comes in tablet form. It kills both larvae and adult worms. It can be used in cases of pinworm infection that cannot be treated with other drugs. It is not the first choice in a doctor's recommendation for the pinworm cure.

     It is not recommended to pregnant women or to persons with impaired liver function.

     It is used in the treatment of parasitosis. It is used in cases of pinworm infection where the person cannot be treated with other medications for pinworms, for example in cases with adverse effects from various medications.

     Adverse effects of albendazole are rare but include:

  • Fever, rash or itching
  • Sore throat, fever, unusual fatigue and weakness (at high doses)
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Thinning hair (very rare). Hair recovers after stopping treatment.

     Frequency - The pinworm infection is a parasitosis that is widely spread, affecting school age children, the elderly and persons placed in psychiatric hospitals or other places with that require a long time of hospitalization. This disease, often familial, is the most frequent parasitosis for Infants in temperate countries, as mentioned in the actual expression "to have worms."
